During June of this summer, Innovation Prevention Education (IPE) hosted its tenth annual social skills, art, and relaxation summer camp. Held over the course of a week, this day camp for youth through the ages of 8-12 offered its campers the opportunity to strengthen their social and leadership skills while also having fun. The camp was offered twice from June 17th-June 21st and also from June 24th-June 28th.
The camp is structured around a combination of evidence-based social skill curriculum, art, and relaxation activities. Throughout the week, participants are able to learn and practice problem solving, controlling anger, conflict resolution, building self-esteem, coping with anxiety, and relaxing when stressed. Examples of art crafts and fun activities campers were also able to complete include the following: painting, drawing and coloring, stained glass art making, vision board making, jewelry making, and more. With the help of camp counselors and staff, the youth were able to strengthen their skills, express their feelings in a pro-social manner, and enjoy the broad range of camp activities.
In addition to having the opportunity to learn skills and engage in exciting camp activities, campers were also able to create friendships with their other fellow campers. Camp days were also lined with a series of guest speakers and professionals that provided the campers with engaging presentations that exposed them to new material. To top this off, on the last day of each weekly camping session, campers were able to celebrate their learning of new skills and enjoyment of camp with an end-of-camp party.
By fulfilling its vision of “Empowering, Equipping, and Encouraging Through Prevention Education” under the leadership of its staff and founder Lena Brathwaite Bell, IPE was able to really challenge young minds and provide these minds with knowledge that will be of incredible use to them.
